How to Prepare for a Job Interview

Interviews are not just about answering questions… they are about showing who you are.

At SNAP Workforce, we know interviews can feel intimidating. But with the right
preparation, you can walk in with confidence, clarity and purpose. Whether it’s your first
interview or your fiftieth, here is how to get ready and make a strong impression.

1. Know the Role

  • Read the job ad carefully. Highlight the key skills and responsibilities.
  • Think about how your experience matches what they are looking for.
  • If you’re unsure, ask your SNAP coach to help you break it down.

2. Practice Common Questions

You don’t need perfect answers… just honest ones. Practice saying them out loud:

  • “Tell us about yourself.”
  • “Why do you want this job?”
  • “What are your strengths?”
  • “Can you give an example of working in a team?”
  • “How do you handle stress or challenges?”

Tip: Use real examples from work, study, volunteering or life experience.

3. Dress for the Role

  • Choose clean, neat clothes that suit the workplace.
  • For hospitality, retail, or trades: smart casual is usually fine.
  • For office or formal roles: go a little more polished in business attire.

4. Arrive Early

  • Aim to arrive 10–15 minutes before your interview.
  • Plan your transport the day before.
  • Bring a copy of your resume and any certificates or licenses.

5. Show Respect and Confidence

  • Greet your interviewer with a smile and eye contact.
  • Listen carefully and don’t rush your answers.
  • If you don’t understand a question, it’s okay to ask for clarification.

6. Ask a Question

At the end, you might be asked: “Do you have any questions?” Here are some good options:

  • “What does a typical day look like in this role?”
  • “What support or training is available?”
  • “What qualities do successful team members have here?”

7. Reflect Afterwards

  • Think about what went well and what you would like to improve.
  • If you don’t get the job, ask for feedback; it helps you grow.
  • Celebrate the effort. Every interview builds confidence.
